Unlike many prejudiced thoughts, according to Enzo, “Rwanda is a very safe country.” Kigali, as a city, is also very clean,” one of the cleanest in Africa. Additionally, he also characterized “the people in the society” as “very friendly.” This year, ASM was happy to have an in-person conference, welcoming over 13 different countries and 17 different schools worldwide. During day 1 of the ASMMUN conference, I interviewed Enzo Carema from Rwanda who gave some insightful opinions on the club, how the conferences are taking place, and even his own experience as a Rwandan citizen.

  • How is it like living in Rwanda?

  • Did you get a chance to visit Milan yet?
“Yes. We visited the Duomo, The Last Supper and City Life. In the upcoming week we are going to San Siro. It is my first time in Milan and so far, I am liking the city a lot, especially the Duomo.”

  • Is this your first in-person conference? If yes what do you think of it so far?
“No, this is my second in person conference after this June’s conference. This conference is very different from my first but it is certainly very interesting. It is different because the first conference I participated in was done in my school and the way we do MUN is very different. For example, I had not heard of the P5 threats until now and, in my committee, every five minutes there is a P5 threat, so it is very interesting to see these differences.”

  • What is your role in the conferences?
“In this conference, I am a delegate and I am enjoying it very much since I like arguing and proving claims.”

  • Can you tell me about your committee? What are you currently debating and what is your personal opinion on it?
“I am part of the Security Council committee and currently, we are discussing about the situation in Ukraine. In these next few days, we will also be debating about the situation in Tigray and the situation regarding Taiwan and China relations. It is very interesting to hear different countries’ opinions” as “it makes me reflect on how difficult it is to resolve issues in the world, ensuring that everyone is satisfied and content.”

  • What do you think participating in MUN has taught you/is teaching you?
“I used to be a weak public speaker and thanks to MUN, I have improved my public speaking skills. I also think my research skills have improved as, before debating, I have to do a lot of research on the issue and where the country I represent stands. Lastly, MUN also encouraged me to follow the news more so to always be aware about current events.”
