Are you interested in becoming a Chair? What is it like being a Chair? Today I will be interviewing the Chair of World Health Organization, Alexander Woods. Alexander Woods is a senior of the American School of Milan, and has been part of the Model United Nations for over 3 years now. He will be offering his insight today into what’s it like being a Chair, and how it’s like living in Milan.

  •  Interviewer: How do you feel about the position as Chair?

For a very long time I was a delegate, last year in ASM I was the delegate of Russia in the Security Council Committee. This year is actually the first time I decided to chair, and while it is definitely very exciting it is a bit challenging, but I think that it's quite a nice change of scenery. I went from delegate to Chair, and I think it has been quite an interesting process.

  • Do you prefer being a delegate? If so, why?
While this is the first ASM conference I've chaired at, I did of course do some chairing within other MUN settings (like within our MUN club). Each position has its benefits.  As a delegate you can really get into your role and be passionate about it and you can take part in interesting and controversial debates. But chairing is also very interesting, I get to take a more managerial role and be there for younger delegates who aren't as experienced, guide them on how to improve, taking on that nurturing role is a really rewarding.

  • Would you suggest someone to take up a position as chair?
If you are passionate about the MUN club then I'd totally pursue this position. Although being a delegate is a great thing and there's no shame in it, the chair position offers you that extra step and initiative that delegation allows. Personally, it has been a very fulfilling experience for me.

  • Finally, how is it living in Milan?
Milan is a lovely city, and after searching for potential universities abroad, I can truly say that nothing really feels like home. Milan really does have something that makes it special for me, I would say. Of course everyone comes to love the food, and yes the food is amazing, for example, tomatoes in the UK would not taste the same, but it’s more than that, I love its architecture, its culture, and its lively people. Milan is an amazing city that I have fallen in love with! I hope you enjoy your stay.

  • Thank you for your time! I hope you enjoy the rest of the conference.
